The History of Lotus Touch
New Life was founded in 1986 as a full-service wholesale distributor to the health and wellness industries. Our primary customers were massage therapists and beauty salons who were adding spa-like services to their menus.
The existing product line included products from well known manufacturers including Earthlite, Living Earth Crafts and Biotone. In 1998, New Life Systems started to receive a significant numbers of phone calls from massage therapists who were asking for massage products without nut oils.
New Life researched the industry for a product that would satisfy the therapists’ need. The focus of our research changed as reports of nut oil allergies increased. Not only were therapists reacting to nut oils in their massage products, but so were their clients.
Therapists with sore hands couldn’t deliver good treatments resulting in loss of income for themselves as well as the spa or salon. Clients who developed a post-treatment reaction often wondered what they had eaten that caused the reaction. What they didn’t realize was it wasn’t the food they ate, but the nut-oil based products that caused the problem. Consequently they wouldn’t rebook treatments. Truth be told, it wasn’t the therapists’ responsibility; it was the industry’s responsibility to provide products that solved this problem.
Massage products are ingested by the body through the skin, which can produce an allergic-like reaction which may include itching or a rash. New Life conducted extensive market research to locate an existing product line that did not contain nut oils and minimal amounts of man-made chemicals. The problem was a nut oil-free product line simply did not exist…yet. Continued strategic discussions led to the creation of a nut-oil-free product line manufactured exclusively by New Life, but what would best describe the products?
We incorporated ideas from our clients, consultants and staff. New Life found a single, common thread amongst all of the ideas, touch. A member of the New Life staff suggested we incorporate the Lotus flower. This exotic water lily is unique because the flower floats on top of a lily pad and has a long stem that dives down, deep into the moist, nutrient-rich soil of the pond, thus Lotus Touch was born.
